CEED Entrance Exam Studio Test Interview & Portfolio

Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is a qualifying examination for admission to Master of Design (M.Des.) programmes at IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Kanpur, and PhD programmes in Design at some Institutes. CEED is conducted by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). The objective of CEED is to assess the candidates’ aptitude for design involving visual perception ability, drawing skills, logical reasoning, creativity and communication skills. Qualifying in CEED alone does not guarantee admission to any of the above programmes. Admitting Institutes may conduct further tests and/or interviews for the final selection/admission in addition to the weightage given to the CEED score. Admitting Institutes will also verify the eligibility, the category certificates and other documents along with the CEED score. There is no age limit to appear for CEED. Besides, a candidate can appear for CEED any number of times. The CEED score is valid for a period of two years from the date of declaration of the results.

The examination will consist of two parts, Part A and Part B. Candidates have to attempt questions from both the parts. Part A contains multiple choice (MCQ) type questions and Part B consists of design and hand drawing type questions.

CEED qualified students are eligible for the following postgraduate programmes in various institutes with the specialization as mentioned:

Programme, Institute & Specialization:

IISc Banglore (Product Design & Engineering), IIT Bombay (Industrial Design, Visual Communication, Animation, Interaction Design, Mobility & Vehicle Design), IIT Delhi (Industrial Design), IIT Guwahati (Design), IIT Hyderabad (Visual Design), IIT Kanpur (Design)

Ph.D.: (Design) IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Kanpur

For the M.Des. programmes at IISc Bangalore and IIT Kanpur, the GATE qualified candidates will also be considered.

Elements of Studio Test & Interview:

The studio test tests students’ ability to work with various materials. A student is expected to think of intelligent design solutions to given problem and come up with an innovative design solution and express the idea by moulding the given materials. Students are made to work with variety of materials and are given design problems which have to be solved and expressed by moulding the given materials.

The studio test may consist of different sections in different formats such as hands on practical assignments, etc. The Test will be conducted in English. Studio Tests will be followed by Personal Interviews.

Studio Test
  1. Doodling test OR Still Life OR Object Study
  2. Observation test
  3. 3D Modeling (GDPD mainly)/ Specialization test (PGDPD)
  • 15-20 frames of incomplete lines are provided
  • These are used for pyscho-analyses
  • You need to express something
  • You also need to have captions for your work

Sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch are the five traditionally recognized senses. The test will be testing child’s ability of paying close attention to many details, focus, analyzing skills, reasoning skills, and memory.
3D Model:
  • In GDPD -3D Model to be created as per brief & materials provided
  • Your work is judged on-1. Whether the finished model suffices the brief 2. How well materials are used 3. How well you understand and solve the problem.

Personal Interviews:
Personal Interviews will be conducted separately for each discipline of specialization, immediately after the studio tests at the same centre. Interviews are not meant to be intimidating. It is a chance for the interviewers and interviewees to find out how they will both benefit with their future association. Interview is meant to be a conversation, an easy discussion about the investment of your time and money in the study programme and how much you will actually be able to gain from it. The university employees will try to gauge why you have chosen the college. They try to find out if you will be able to do well in the program and after that. Lastly, they would also test whether you would be able to adapt to the college environment.

Your portfolio is the most important aspect of your application. Your portfolio should show a selection of your best, recent artwork or design. Your portfolio work should reflect your ideas, interests, experience and abilities in design or art field to date. It should also reflect your personality.
